CURRENT WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR NEW LOCATION AT Inauguration exhibit: SHIFT by Boukje Janssen press release We are proud to inaugurate our new location with SHIFT an exhibit by Dutch artist Boukje Janssen. On view will be a wide range of works such as drawings, paintings and objects. Appropriate to LMAKprojects’ new environment, the works featured in SHIFT reflect on the change in space, time, mind and body. In Fugacity, a large, architectural painting, Janssen questions the perception of space as the viewer becomes aware of his environment through the work. A similar examination is visible in a smaller painting, titled One hundred million light years. The title implies infinite space, the square painted object fits almost in the palm of your hand, revealing how our psyche is formatted with certain structures. Ensemble is a rather literal interpretation of space and its relation to the viewer in it Janssen has added a surprising, yet relevant, sculptural element. Janssen’s drawings offer an alternate approach to the body and its environment, her recent series Reverse explore the relation between reflection and the dematerialization of the body, visualizing the human figure as an anonymous, insignificant element caught in the complex web of the present. Janssen refers to the fact that the human figure is a shadow or embellishment of reality, since society controls and conditions our lives. This is also apparent in Group, Team and Constellation. In this work she ‘captured’ and pinned small, white, anonymous figures and placed them in wooden boxes like a study of entomology. Janssen urges the viewer with these miniaturized scenes to observe reality from a panoptical perspective and to realize that we are no greater than any other vulnerable species. SHIFT is a quiet, poetic installation of various works, presenting the notion of space and time. With this exhibition Janssen offers insightful perspective of our presence in our current society. Boukje Janssen (1971) born in Eindhoven, the Netherlands lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied at The Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam; The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, Israel and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. Her work was included in several venues worldwide: C-Space, Beijing, China; Casino Luxembourg, Luxembourg; Van Zijl Langhout and Inkijk both in Amsterdam, the Netherlands: Centraal Museum, Utrecht andTENT., Rotterdam, both inThe Netherlands; Total Arts Gallery, Dubai EA; De Vishal, Haarlem; Museum Beelden aan Zee, Schevingen, both in the Netherlands. She has received several fellowships and stipends such as Fonds BKVB, Amsterdam (2004), La Fundacion Antorchas, Buenos Aires, AR (2003) and Stichting Trustfonds Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, NL (2001 and 2000).
